The qualifications for the Men’s Euro Basketball Championship and the European Women’s Handball Championship begin without two iconic coaches of French sport: Vincent Collet and Olivier Krumbholz. A wind of change has blown for the France women’s handball and men’s basketball teams, both supported by Caisse d’Epargne, a partner of their respective federations.
It is a very special winter for French team sports. For the first time in fifteen years, two teams from France are preparing for a major international event without their two emblematic coaches of the national sport. It was in 2009 that Vincent Collet took over the reins of the France men’s basketball team. Olivier Krumbholz, already managed the French women’s handball team since… 1999. He will continue until 2013 before a three-season break, followed by a resumption in 2016 to finish on a high note this summer. Like Collet. These two coaches led the destiny of two major French teams with flamboyant epics that have left their mark on the memories.
If we have to remember one or two great moments for each of them, it would be worth distinguishing the first world championship title in 2003 and of course the Olympic title in Tokyo in 2021 for Olivier Krumbholz. For Vincent Collet, it would be the title of European champion in 2013 in Slovenia, with the famous semi-final against Spain and of course, the extraordinary course of the Bleus at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, the highlight of which was the final against the United States, now part of the legend.
Both men left their positions after the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Krumbholz won fifteen medals with a title in the three major competitions, European championships, world championships and Olympic Games. He has been inducted into the Hall of Fame of the French Handball Federation. The man from Metz has taken a well-deserved retirement at the age of 66. Vincent Collet, 61 years old, after winning nine international medals with the Bleus, is now working in the NBA with the Cleveland Cavaliers.
The two men therefore set off at the top, after a successful final tournament. Krumbholz – who remains on a world championship title and a silver medal at the Olympic Games Paris 2024 – handed over the leadership of the French team to the man who had been his assistant in the team since 2016, Sébastien Gardillou. A break in continuity. As for the French basketball team, it will now be led by a former player of the French team who has become a recognized coach, Frédéric Fauthoux.
Sébastien Gardillou is about to play his first international competition at the head of the French national team with the European women’s Handball championship which takes place from November 28 to December 15 and Frédéric Fauthoux, for his part, is successfully starting (four wins in four games) a qualifying campaign for Euro 2025…
It is always complicated to start a mandate at the head of a selection with such shadows… But that’s what high level sport is all about, an eternal restart with new stories to live and to tell.
