Basketball: the French women’s team crowned European vice-champions!

Thursday, 1 july 2021

Hitherto undefeated, the French players were outplayed by Serbia in the final round of the competition. Their silver medal, however, marked their presence in the finals of a European championship for the 5th time in succession. A record!

The French team was able to count on the support of more than 2,500 spectators at each game played in the Rhénus stadium in Strasbourg. But even better still, thanks to the presence of Kop France Basket, the official fan club of the French basketball teams and sponsored by the Caisse d’Epargne since the club was first created, the supporters on the stands literally went wild! To mark the occasion, all the Kop club members were able to don a “Caisse d’Epargne” outfit for the very first time in an international competition. And, what is more, the Caisse d’Epargne decided to sponsor the broadcasts of the semi-finals and finals on the W9 TV channel and to display the brand’s billboards before the games were aired in order to further boost its communications around basketball.

All in all, more than 10,000 spectators were able to watch the French women compete in Strasbourg: a fine operation for the Caisse d’Epargne Grand Est Europe, which partnered the event. On the court, the Caisse d’Epargne Rhône Alpes, Caisse d’Epargne Aquitaine Poitou-Charentes, and Caisse d’Epargne Loire-Centre were represented by the athletes they sponsor with, respectively, Marine Johannes, Valériane Ayayi Vukosavljevic, and Iliana Rupert!

But the season is far from over for the French players. They now have a little less than a month to get ready before setting off for Tokyo. As they will be competing in a group with the American and Japanese teams as rivals, France will have to do its very best if it wants to reach the quarterfinals… before dreaming of possibly mounting the podium, a distinction the French women players achieved in London in 2012, when they won a silver medal…
