At the closing ceremony, Paris 2024 was hailed as the greatest Paralympic Games in history. This recognition should change the daily lives of the French Paralympic athletes who have thrilled us in so many different ways.
History will record that it was she who won the last French paralympic medal of these unforgettable games. Nélia Barbosa, a paralympic kayaker supported by Banque BCP, who took silver in the final of the KL3 sprint event and trains at the Champigny-sur-Marne club not far from where she lives, brought its 75th medal to the French delegation. This enabled France to stand 8th in the national rankings and reach its predetermined objective.
Aside from the numbers, however, the French athletes exceeded all expectations in terms of emotion. We’ll long remember that magical moment when, at 3.29pm on September 1st, two great figures in the French sporting community, Marie Patouillet, a para cyclist supported by BPCE Financement, and Tanguy de La Forest, a para shooter supported by the Caisse d’Epargne Ile-de-France, were crowned Paralympic champions at one and the same time. Moments later, the notes of the Marseillaise rang out, and the two podiums offered an image of immense emotional strength. Marie Patouillet, a medical doctor who suffered a brief fainting fit, was held up by the other two medalists as they listened to the French national anthem. Meanwhile, in Châteauroux in central France, Tanguy de la Forest expressed the strength of his emotion to be crowned Paralympic champion, having previously failed to win a medal in five Paralympic Games. He also had the immense honor of sharing the role of flag-bearer for the French delegation at the closing ceremony of the Paralympic Games.
We will also remember the French para cycling team’s incredible achievement of winning a staggering total of 28 medals, including those claimed by Dorian Foulon, supported by Banque Populaire Aquitaine Centre Atlantique, Alexandre Léauté, supported by Banque Palatine, Loïc Vergnaud, supported by Caisse d’Epargne Loire Drôme Ardèche and, of course, Marie Patouillet, supported by BPCE Financement.
Like the Olympic Games Paris 2024, the Paralympic Games were an extraordinary success. With the sale of more than 2.5 million tickets, the competitions, broadcast by 165 TV channels worldwide, took place in an exceptional atmosphere.
There will obviously be a ‘before’ and ‘after’ to this summer of 2024 for the Paralympic athletes. They had already embarked upon a process of professionalization, especially after London 2012 when some of them had already hired agents and press attachés. It’s clear that the buzz generated by Paris 2024 will further their cause towards greater inclusion and help improve their lives as elite athletes. They will have greater opportunities to sign image contracts, for example, since the Paralympic Games will have helped change the way the public views people with disabilities. This will inevitably change the daily lives of these para athletes.
These Paralympic Games brought to a magnificent conclusion the “marvelous parenthesis” that began on a rainy evening and closed in the rain of the closing ceremony. All these para athletes were so happy to be in the national French stadium to share this last moment together, despite the downpour. The memory of all the emotions they expressed will remain etched in our hearts and souls. These Paralympic Games Paris 2024 have already been hailed as the “best games in history.” Every athlete, spectator, organizer, and volunteer will forever remember this summer of 2024!
