Tokyo: Groupe BPCE, proud of its athletes’ performances

Tuesday, 10 august 2021

The athletes supported by the Group and its companies won 13 medals for the French delegation at the Tokyo Olympic Games.

After 16 days of elation, encouragement, and exhilaration, the competitions drew to a close on August 8. Groupe BPCE and its companies – actively involved on an everyday basis with a total of 140 athletes via federal contracts, the performance pact, individual image contracts, etc. – are proud to have supported nearly 40 of these individual sportsmen and women in Tokyo along with the basketball* (3×3 & 5×5), handball**, surfing and sailing teams throughout this superb competition.

No fewer than 13 medals were won for the French delegation by the athletes supported by the Group and its companies (see infographics). For Banque Populaire, sailing reasserted its status by bringing home 3 medals. Surfing, for its part, made a remarkable debut, thanks to the discipline’s media appeal.

As for the Caisse d’Epargne, the incredible Tokyo adventure ended with an historic weekend for the team sports supported by the French savings bank: two gold medals for French handball and two medals – silver and bronze – for basketball.

Some of our athletes also achieved very fine performances in this adventure. We could mention, for example, Maxime Grousset and his remarkable 4th place in the final of the 100m freestyle swimming race (read article), Marie Le Net, 5th in the women’s Madison event (cycling), or Pascal Martinot-Lagarde, 5th in the final of the 110m hurdles, just six hundredths of a second short of the podium. Also noteworthy is the presence of Jimmy Gressier in the final of the 5,000m (athletics) and the very promising 6th place overall in the uneven bars event (gymnastics) achieved by Melanie De Jesus Dos Santos.

And let’s not forget the women’s 3×3 basketball team, which rose to the top of the world rankings and finished fourth in the tournament overall, a performance that bodes well for Paris 2024.

Congratulations to all our athletes in the Olympic Games! Our next rendezvous will start on August 24 and run until September 5 when we’ll be supporting the athletes in the French Paralympic team taking part in the competitions. They include 27 supported by Groupe BPCE and its companies. Click here to learn more about them!
